I (think) I Saw it First!!!

2014-10-12

It is like a dream, now. Back when I was at U of M ('91 - '95), the student section at the Big House was "first come, first serve." (Is it still like that?) I had my routine down: I would wake up at about 7, cook up a huge breakfast to soak up Friday night's festivities, suck down a strong bloody mary, crack the DKE house kegs, drink about ten beers and be on my way to the Stadium (sometimes stopping at Blue Front) for a pint of something to sneak in.) I would get to the stadium around 10 - 10:30 and ALWAYS have crack at front row of the Student Section, down in the corner of the end-zone.

It was great! We use to stand on the wall, facing the students and get them all jacked up. On one particularly wonderful Saturday, against the severely hated Notre Dame, that seat proved to be the best of 101, 701. Elvis set back, threw a seemingly uncatchable pass, so far in the back of the end-zone that I had to lean over the wall, looking right down the line to catch a glimpse ... of Desmond laying out horizontal to make the winning catch. I leaped in the air seeing exactly what the rest of the world would soon see on the cover of Sports Illustrated. That one moment was worth a thousand early mornings and the hang-overs that went with them. He never let us down - You're the Man, Desmond!
